Alpine skiing was developed from cross-country skiing when ski lift equipments was improved at mountain resorts to drag skiers back to the top of slopes, thus making it achievable to constantly enjoy skiing down precipitous, extensive slopes that would be otherwise arduous to climb. The sport is popular wherever the combination of mountain slopes, snow and a sufficient tourist infrastructure can be built up, including parts of North America, Europe, New Zealand and Australia, the East Asia, and South America Andes. Alpine skiing (or downhill skiing) is a spare time activity and hobby concerning descending down snow-covered hills by means of lengthy skis attached to each foot.
